ELECTROLYSIS

What is electrolysis?

Electrology is the only method of permanent hair removal approved by the FDA, utilizing three primary techniques. Each technique involves inserting a small, rounded-tip metal probe into the hair follicle and applying a slight electric current to demolish the follicle’s ability to create hair. Unlike the needles used for medical procedures, electrology probes are specially designed to avoid puncturing the skin. The insertion is typically painless as they are inserted into natural openings of hair follicles. There are varying opinions on which modality technique is most effective and least damaging to the skin. However, it is generally observed that while all modalities are effective over time, some like flash, have higher regrowth rates and may require repeated treatments, potentially leading to more skin damage. At ZAP, I primarily use galvanic electrolysis and the blend method. For clients that are sensitive to direct current, I may use manual thermolysis. Due to it’s efficiency and reliable results, I prefer to recommend the blend method for surgical preparation.

What makes ZAP! different?

My speciality is in blend methodology, a customizable and adaptable mode of electrology that blends speed, comfort, and customizability for a truly tailored treatment.

What does it feel Like?

Sensations vary on a person by person basis. Sensitivity varies based on body part and some people experience more discomfort than others. I will always prioritize personalizing the settings in your treatments to ensureI am able to work quickly and effectively, keeping it as comfortable for you as possible.

Why electrolysis over laser?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. Laser treatment may reduce hairs but may not result in permanent removal, and typically is most effective for people with light skin and dark hair. There are also additional considerations that come with laser treatment, such as the risk for Paradoxial Hypertrychosis (damage to surrounding hair follicles elicits a bodily response resulting in non-visible hairs growing back deeply and dark). Electrolysis treatment does not have such restrictions. When compared to electrolysis, laser treatment can appear as a quicker option. This is because laser is not permanent, requiring consistent maintenance and treatment. Electrolysis does take longer to treat an area; however, the results are truly permanent due to follicles being properly treated. No further hair will grow from treated follicles. This is also why electrolysis is the only real recommendation for those seeking surgery prep work.

How long will this proccess take?

The length of treatment varies from person to person. How long the process will take is something we evaluate and discuss in person. Larger areas take longer to accomplish. In your initial consultation, we take time to discuss your goals and map out your treatment plan. Please note, we will never be able to definitively give an exact timeline to complete your treatments.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Can I use Medicine?

You can discuss pain management options such as over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and topical lidocaine (usually 5%) products with your doctor. Your doctor may also give you the option of higher dosages than are listed for non-prescription use. Your doctor may prescribe you pain medications or anti-anxiety medications which may help you feel more comfortable.
